Tonight, the Beaver Moon will shine as 2024’s final supermoon, appearing larger and brighter than a typical full moon. It will peak at 4:28 pm ET, just as the sun sets 10 minutes later, providing a breathtaking view in the northeastern sky. At only 226,000 miles away from Earth, this is one of the closest encounters of the year and the last until November 25, 2034.
The Beaver Moon gets its name from the seasonal activities of beavers, who begin seeking shelter for the winter at this time. Historically, it was also the period when colonists and Algonquin tribes set beaver traps before swamps froze, ensuring a steady supply of warm furs for the harsh winter ahead.
Many full moon names come from Native American culture, and the Beaver Moon is no exception. Alternative names include the Hunter Moon, Mourning Moon, Reed Moon, and Frost Moon, all reflecting the changing seasons and cultural interpretations of this time of year.
Astrologer Richard Nolle first coined the term “supermoon” in 1979 to describe a full or new moon occurring when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, known as perigee. Tonight’s Beaver Moon, at 100% illumination, perfectly fits this definition, making it an unmissable event.
The moon’s journey over three days enhances its spectacle. On Thursday, it was 98% illuminated, it will shine fully tonight at 100%, and on Saturday, it will wane slightly to 99%. This gradual transition makes the supermoon a mesmerizing celestial display across multiple nights.
Adding to tonight’s wonder, Mercury, Venus, Saturn, and Mars will grace the night sky alongside the supermoon. Venus and Saturn will shine brightly in the southwest, while Mars will rise just before midnight. This planetary gathering makes tonight a stargazer’s delight.
Jupiter will add its brilliance to the east, rising about two hours after the supermoon. Its appearance later in the night complements the lunar brightness, offering an extended cosmic display for both early and late-night viewers. This year, the Beaver Moon appears in Taurus, a constellation symbolizing wealth, material possessions, and physical beauty. Astrologers highlight the moon’s energy as a time to indulge in luxury and channel desires for prosperity and romance through symbolic rituals using candles and gemstones.
The Beaver Moon is the second-to-last in a rare series of four consecutive supermoons in 2024. The next and final supermoon of the year is due on December 15, offering one last chance to marvel at the extraordinary closeness and brightness of our lunar companion.
Celebrity astrologer Kyle Thomas recommends tapping into the moon’s energy by setting intentions and manifesting dreams. Using green candles to attract wealth or pink candles for love aligns with Taurus’ influence. He suggests combining these with gemstones, soil, and other natural elements to fully harness the moon’s power.
